In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore practical leadership skills essential for guiding student assistants, small groups, and doctoral dissertations. The two half-day sessions will cover aspects of communication strategies, providing constructive feedback, motivation and conflict management. Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to discuss specific supervisory challenges they face in their roles, fostering peer-to-peer learning and collaborative problem-solving. This workshop aims to empower postdocs with the skills and confidence needed to create a positive and productive academic environment for both themselves and their students.

The written application for Junior-, tenure-track and lifetime professorships is a challenge. One particular problem is that applicants underestimate how poorly appointment committees sometimes understand their application. As a result, relevant information may not be provided.

•    How you can adapt your application to the call for applications.

Eine Möglichkeit, um die eigene Auffindbarkeit und Sichtbarkeit als Wissenschaftler*in zu fördern, ist Profile bei ORCID, Google Scholar, ResearchGate und LinkedIn zu nutzen und professionell zu gestalten. Interessant sind diese Profile, wenn Sie online „gefunden werden” und ihren akademischen Werdegang mit wichtigen Publikationen präsentieren möchten.

Im Workshop analysieren Sie ihre aktuelle Sichtbarkeit und lernen Möglichkeiten kennen, ihr wissenschaftliches Selbstmarketing in der Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft durch diese Profile zu erhöhen. Sie erstellen einen Plan, wie ihre Online-Sichtbarkeit aussehen soll und können im Workshop an der Optimierung ihrer Wissenschaftsprofile arbeiten. Die Gestaltung der Profile ist leicht umsetzbar und die Arbeit, die Sie in diese Profile investieren, ist überschaubar.

It explores the changing roles and responsibilities over the doctoral life cycle and provides hands-on tools and recommendations to establish and maintain a positive working relationship – not only with doctoral candidates but also masters’ students and postdocs.

AI-based tools enable researchers to work more efficiently and effectively. However, it is important for researchers to use these tools judiciously and with an understanding of their limitations and considering the policies of the funding agencies. The workshop will integrate questions / material / text / ideas from participants. Content / suggestions and questions from the participants will be implemented live online as input into the AI tools. These case studies and live exercises will help participants to apply the concepts and tools to their own scientific research and proposal writing.

This workshop offers international postdocs detailed insight into the German academic system. The German system is coined, on the one hand, by an unparalleled level of freedom at professorial level, safeguarded by the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany. On the other hand, we have very few permanent positions for postdocs and a special act on fixed-term employment only for academia.
Module 1 will focus on the German academic system, its structure, the politics behind it and how they impact every single postdoc position.

Module 2 introduces participants to the different career paths for postdocs in academia in detail.
