The Frühjahrsakademie offered valuable tips and experience reports
Is a doctorate the right step for me? And what is the best way to prepare for it? Over 100 interested students took advantage of this year's Frühjahrsakademie to deal with these questions and exchange experiences.
The Vice-Rector for Research, Career Development & Science Transfer at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Prof. Dr. Dr. med. Dagmar Führer-Sakel, opened the Frühjahrsakademie on 19 March and, in her welcoming address, emphasised the opportunities and freedom offered by the doctoral phase. Afterwards Simon Kresmann, coordinator of the Graduate Center Plus at the UDE, spoke with advanced early career researchers from the UA Ruhr Universities about their experiences and tips for the exciting, but also challenging phase of the doctorate. Subsequently, subject-related discussion rounds offered space for individual questions.
In the afternoon, workshops invited the participants to clarify for themselves the question of whether the doctorate is the right career step and to find out how they can optimally shape the starting phase.
On the following two days, the program included full-day workshops on the topics of self-management, presentation, good scientific practice and networking. In a writing workshop, the participants were able to try out and apply practical tips and methods for the successful development of their doctoral research proposal. The offerings of the three-day academy were very well received by both doctoral students and those interested in a doctorate. Many of those present took the opportunity to network with fellow students from other UA Ruhr universities and to establish contacts beyond their own discipline.
