A career in business and society
At this year's Wirtschaftskolleg on 11 November, around 80 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from University Alliance Ruhr took the opportunity to talk to HR professionals and alumni about career opportunities in business and society after the doctorate.
In his opening speech, Frank Kamp, Head of Human Resources and Services at Emschergenossenschaft und Lippeverband (EGLV), spoke about the demands and requirements on executives and gave an insight into the recruitment and selection process at EGLV.
Afterwards, experts answered questions, gave valuable tips and discussed success factors for a career outside academia. How do you make the leap into business after your doctorate? Is my scientific profile interesting for employers? Do I have enough work experience for a management position? And what additional qualifications are required? On these and many other topics, early career researchers from the humanities and social sciences, engineering sciences and natural and life sciences exchanged with the invited guests in three panels.
The small rounds of talks were ideal for getting rid of personal questions, gaining an insight into the individual CVs of the experts and also talking about failure and detours on the way to the desired profession. Over snacks and drinks, these conversations were continued afterwards and many participants took the opportunity to expand their network.
